What is Mental Health? | Why Understanding and Improving it gives you Superpowers?

What is Mental Health?

Mental Health (MH) is a person’s condition in regards to their social, psychological, and emotional well-being.

Think about this for a second. The state of your Mental Health is a realtime status of your well being from a mental standpoint.

The state of your mental health affects how you:

  • Think
  • Feel
  • Act

It’s also influenced by a variety of factors including genetics, mental capabilities, life events, and lifestyle choices.

Your Mental Health State (MHS) affects your ability to enjoy life and handle mental stresses that occur in life. Therefore, it’s imperative that you understand your mental health in order to gauge your current state. From that point, you can work to maintain awareness and improve your state to gain more power over how you think, feel, and act. Achieving more power will give you more self-awareness and self-control.

Mental Health is a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

World Health Organization (WHO)

Self-awareness is monitoring our inner worlds, thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. Self-control is defined as the ability to subdue your impulses, emotions, and behaviors in order to achieve your long-term goals. Self-control is also touted to be what separates modern people from our primitive ancestors and animals. To have a powerful amount of self-control naturally makes you smarter and stronger than those who don’t possess a high level of self-control.

Discussions about MH are most commonly associated with mental illness conditions like anxiety, mood, and schizophrenia disorders. However, everyone has a level of MH. Mental health is about understanding that we have a measurable level of mental wellness or strength rather than someone who has been diagnosed with a mental illness.
